What college major does wedding/event planning mostly fall under?

I would think hospitality but then I looked up info about hospitality services and the careers you can get with that major and wedding/event planning wasn’t listed.

Business. There is no school to be a wedding planner. It’s an independent business that you would open yourself. However, you may also want to look into design/interior decorating/botany classes since they are all relevant.

perhaps marketing or communications?

I don’t think there is a college major of "wedding planning." try event coordinator or get a degree in small buisness because that’s pretty much what it is. Good luck.

You don’t need a 4-year college degree for wedding/event planning. But learning marketing or business administration could help you run your own business if you decided to enter the field. The best thing to do is see if you can get a job with a wedding/event planner or caterer. Then you learn the ropes from inside and eventually you’ll have enough business contacts to do the job on your own. It takes knowing people and being an insider in order to get the best deals for clients. Better deals = more clients. Good luck!

I studied Hospitality Management, worked as a hotel manager and then became an event manager where I gained lots of experience dealing with all sorts of events. After 12 years I set up my own company wedding planning business. http://www.cheap-wedding-solutions.com/

You do see lots of courses advertised to become a wedding planner but from my experience I think that is too limited.

Good luck with your career

First of all, congratulations on planning out your path in advance!

Unfortunately, there are only a few universities in the nation that offer an actual event planning degree or courses; for the list, go to: http://www.careers-in-event-planning.com/event-planning-schools.html

I run a website that helps people start their career in event planning; and I almost always recommend that you pursue a degree in Business with a minor in Marketing. There are two reasons for this (1) if your event planning career doesn’t take off, or if you decide it’s not for you, you still have a degree that is applicable toward countless other options. And, (2), many people who go into event planning eventually want to start their own business, someday; and this background is imperative.

Also, I strongly recommend that you use your time while you’re in school to get as much hands-on experience as you can. Join a sorority and get on the event planning committee; or find local events in your community (such as Race for the Cure, or any fund raiser for any non-profit) and volunteer. Volunteer for as many events as you can; because truly, the only two things that will separate you in this industry are experience, and contacts.

And finally, learn about the industry. Event planning and wedding planning are two entirely separate career paths, and don’t transfer as easily as you might think. If you think you want to be an event planner someday, don’t start off in weddings; stick to events.

Good luck!
